Designing a sustainable single-family residence 2019
Modest in scale and small in footprint, the 800 square-foot single-family residence located in Mill Valley, California, explores sustainability, materiality, and compact spatial planning, characterized by a minimal hyperrectangular form which informs the interior. Elements of volume, light, proportion, and materiality are orchestrated to respond to the project’s unique compact spatial challenges, echoing the juxtaposition of intimacy and openness.

Our mission is to invest time on projects that work towards the betterment of humanity, inspiring the way we live, learn, heal, work and play. Sensitive to the ever-evolving needs of the built environment, our areas of research and focus have been net-zero energy and sustainable design, compact housing, and technology in design.
We believe in architecture that is synonymous with its programmatic, contextual and environmental needs; manipulated to generate unconventional building constructs to establish new, balanced anatomy of forms.
Our work is highly exploratory and research-oriented; grounded in a speculative process, promoting thinking, writing, and making. We use various digital technologies to advance the conceptual exploration of ideas. Interconnected to this, we deploy manual form of craftsmanship and continue to use drawing, painting and making by hand in creating new trajectories.

The Georgia Tech Alumni Magazine writes about LEONOEL
“Demirchelie hopes the work she is doing with LEONOEL can initiate a larger conversation and help spur a new methodology in the fashion industry. “The role of an architect as I’ve understood it is using the design capabilities we have to solve real-world issues,” she says. “That’s becoming more relevant, with all the problems we’re dealing with in the world today. LEONOEL is the byproduct of that belief—that science and design in a multidisciplinary approach can offer holistic solutions to our everyday problems.””

Teaching an architecture studio based on crafting values 2016
Our primary intent for the first year studio is teaching the incoming students first and foremost the thought process. Teaching fundamental skills comes at the secondary position. We envision that a good designer is a responsible and sensible designer. Our approach is primarily formal, in which we teach students to identify, document, and alter formal properties and qualities of the built-environment. Our challenge is to direct the findings beyond the formal properties of design processes and inform the students to broaden their investigation to engage in an understanding of the values in the decision making process.
We asked ourselves, how can we link visual literacy with the sense of responsibilities? How can we use drawings and models as an interlocutor to stimulate the thoughts on ethical values and responsibilities? For this purpose, we design the first semester as a series of interlinked modules in which students proceed from exploring the ephemeral and qualitative to the quantitative properties to materiality before they are tasked with designing wearable architecture.

LEONOEL moves forward
LEONOEL consists of three collections of compostable, biodegradable and reclaimed clothing. The Compostable Collection of clothes degrades within 2-6 months of its disposal in a biological cycle of recovery.
This means at the end of each garment’s life cycle, you may place it in a household compost and use the soil for organic vegetable gardening and all other organic garden practices.

Parametric vases designed with advanced computational design techniques 2018
Parametric design offers a new approach to architecture and product design based on advanced computational design techniques. Parametricism offers a flexible set of components to manipulate, which leads to an infinite amount of variation when designing a product. The vase presented here was generated from a grasshopper script written to produce thousands of variations in form with respect to the predefined grammars and restrictions.
