The architectural narrative for this project is rooted in the authenticity and timelessness of clay and soil, materials that have defined the landscapes and architecture of North Africa for centuries. The design concept draws inspiration from the natural, earthy tones and textures of these elements, celebrating their simplicity, heritage, and deep connection to the land. The architecture embraces the raw beauty of earthen materials, with walls formed from rammed earth and clay plasters that evoke the warmth and solidity of traditional North African dwellings. These tactile surfaces, both smooth and imperfect, ground the design in a sense of place and permanence.
The layout and spatial flow emphasize minimalism and zen-like tranquility, with clean lines, open courtyards, and soft transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. Natural light filters gently through openings and screens, casting shifting shadows that bring the design to life throughout the day. Courtyards and patios are essential elements, creating intimate spaces that reflect the quiet serenity of North African homes, while water features and desert plants offer moments of calm and reflection.
Multiple design iterations around the concept of gathering were explored prior to finalization of the above design.
The initial iterations as shown on the right and below were all use traditional techniques and materials is juxtaposed with modern, understated forms, resulting in a design language that is both ancient and contemporary. This celebration of simplicity, authenticity, and heritage speaks to the soul of the architecture, where every detail is crafted to honor the natural environment and cultural legacy, creating a sanctuary of zen and grounded beauty.
The design language is deeply inspired from the rich cultural heritage of North Africa and Morocco, merging tradition with contemporary design to create an immersive dining experience. The architectural narrative centers on the use of authentic materials, such as tadelakt plaster, zellige tiles, and hand-carved cedar wood, which evoke the textures and warmth of Moroccan craftsmanship. The structure will feature a traditional riad-inspired layout, with an open central courtyard filled with natural light, reminiscent of the tranquil oasis gardens of Marrakech. High archways, and geometric motifs will adorn the walls, allowing natural light to play delicately on the patterned surfaces. Earthy tones will be integrated throughout, drawing from the vibrant palette of the Moroccan landscape. The architecture will blend seamlessly with modern elements—subtle lighting, and a sense of simplicity in the furniture, celebrated by open spaces—to offer an elegant fusion of heritage and creativity.
